The Food Centre has established a reputable role in the food industry for R&D of new food concepts, short and long-term processing, extrusion and food safety training. Since inception, the Food Centre has developed over 1,000 products with an estimated 50% introduced into the market. Our staff boasts an impressive 200 plus years of experience in the food industry and many food scientists.
The Food Centre operates several processing facilities with hundreds of different pieces of equipment to manufacture a variety of food products. Our facilities are distributed across 2 locations – our 10,000 square ft. Pilot Plant on the University of Saskatchewan campus and our 63,000+ square ft. Agri-Food Innovation Centre located in Saskatoon’s holiday park industrial area. Both locations have many certifications and offer different processing options for food processors. In construction in 2022/2023 is our new Advanced Food Ingredients Centre, uniquely set up to house our Fermentation & Bioengineering Program and will offer full scale contract research and contract manufacturing services in fermentation, bioengineering and downstream processing.
Global Recognition on Plant-based Protein Innovations
As the demand for plant-based foods, particularly in the plant-based protein realm, the Food Centre’s expertise in transforming Saskatchewan agriculture into delicious plant-based foods is recognized globally. Over the last several years, the Food Centre has worked with local and international clients in the development of high moisture meat analogues and protein fibration. The Food Centre is recognized globally as a leader in converting plant-based protein through new product development, ingredient validation and extrusion technology. Our twin screw extrusion technology is capable of transforming a wide variety of agricultural crops into innovate consumer food products such as snack foods, breakfast cereal, pet foods, meat analogues and bio-products.
