The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc. (Food Centre) is a non-profit organization, providing full service assistance to food processors looking to add value to their products for domestic and/or international markets. The Food Centre’s line of expertise is diverse - food and process development, interim processing, extrusion technology, skills development, food safety education and training, quality assurance, technology transfer and path-finding. The Centre’s federal processing facility is Saskatchewan’s only commercial incubation centre for food processing.
The Food Centre has established a reputable role in the food industry for R&D of new food concepts, short and long-term processing options, extrusion and food safety training. Since inception, the Food Centre has developed over 885 products with an estimated 50% introduced into the market. Our staff boasts an impressive 125 plus years of experience in the food industry and several food scientists.
Unique to the province is the Food Centre's twin screw extruders and auxiliary technologies. As the demand for plant-based foods, particularly in the plant-based protein realm, the Food Centre's expertise in transforming Saskatchewan agriculture into delicious plant based foods is recognized globally. Over the last several years, the Food Centre has worked with local and international clients in the development of meat analogues and protein fibration. The Food Centre is recognized globally as a leader in converting plant-based protein through new product development, ingredient validation and extrusion technology. This new technology is capable of transforming a wide variety of agricultural crops into innovative consumer food products such as snack foods, breakfast cereal, pet foods, meat analogues and bio-products.
The Food Centre operates 2 federally inspected processing facilities - Pilot Plant located on the University of Saskatchewan campus and the Agri-Food Innovation Centre located in Saskatoon's holiday park industrial area. Both have many certifications and offer different processing options for food processors. Our facilities are set up to process a variety of food products destined for world markets.
